EXTREME TEMPERATURE Whinny Warmers® FAQS:

We’ve received a number of good questions about the new Whinny Warmers® and I wanted to share those questions and answers with you.

Question: What colors do they come in?

Answer: Heather Gray. The heather gray we think is very pretty and it doesn’t show the dirt that the saturated colors of the previous design showed.

Question: Do you have Mini sizes?

Answer:  Soon. Very soon. Keep an out for them as we are working on them now.

Question: Why are the socks more expensive than the previous Whinny Warmers®?

Answer:  We stepped up the quality of the of the yarns. This yarn is leaps ahead of the original Whinny Warmers® and is on par (quality wise) with the new yarns we are using for the Summer Whinnys®. We not only chose a wool blend to offer a much warmer sock, but we also wove, against the leg and on the inside of the sock, a layer of the Fosshield® antimicrobial yarn that is a key component of the Summer Whinnys®. A friend of ours looked at the socks yesterday and said “…if I had a horse, I would pay $100.00 a pair for these socks.” If you are picky about the socks you put on your own feet, you won’t be disappointed in the quality of these socks going on your horse’s legs. Keep in mind also, our yarn is spun and the socks are knit here in America, by Americans. We create American jobs and sleep good at night.

Question: Why can’t I just buy the hock/knee socks to keep those joints warm?

Answer: The HOCK/KNEE extensions depend upon and are designed to be worn with the front leg and rear leg socks. They are supported by the leg socks. They will not stay in place by themselves. They are meant to be an addendum to the leg socks, which allow an owner to add and add focus to the hock and knee joints for a higher level of warmth.

Question: Are they hard to put on?

Answer: Whinny Warmers® are very long socks and they are pulled on over the hoof and up onto the leg. You have a lot more sock to put on over the hoof than with the Summer Whinnys®. Follow the instructions. How to put on Whinny Warmers®. Use the plastic bag and if not the bag, duct tape any rough places on the hoof and you will get the hang of putting them on. The bag and duct tape also protect the inside layer of antimicrobial yarn.

Unless the hoof has nails sticking out or extremely rough places, you don’t need to put the tape on to remove the socks. Taking them off is a breeze! How to take off Whinny Warmers®. Follow the directions and I don’t care how wet and soggy the socks are, they will come off easily. Don’t leave wet socks on your horse. Keep and extra set handy so that you can wash and dry the wet, muddy socks.

Question: My horse is outside all of the time. Are the socks going to work for him?

Answer: Try treating your socks with a “Scotch Guard” type of water resistant product.
I don’t know if this treatment washes out easily when the socks are laundered, but this may help keep a horse in the pasture more comfortable in his socks. The key is to keep warm, dry, socks on your horse. If you can’t do that, then wet muddy socks won’t work for your horse. They work best on horses that can be out of the wet weather at night. Whinny Warmers® are for the circulation impaired or arthritic horses. Healthy young horses don’t need them unless you are wanting to warm their legs before a competition. Our young frisky horses are our guinea pigs. They give a good test of durability and stay-put qualities of the socks so they wear them but they don’t need the Whinny Warmers®. They do however need the Summer Whinnys® and wear them all summer long. We haven’t tried the water resistant products ourselves, but I think it worth a try if your horse has no shelter. Whinny Warmers® must be removed once temperatures reach 50 degrees max. Allowing your horse’s legs to get too hot can cause leg injuries so take them off when temperatures are back on the rise! If it’s going to get warmer than 50 degrees during the day when you won’t be there, take the socks off in the morning. Given this information you have to decide if the socks will work for the situation your horse is in.

Question: They get covered in stall shavings! How do I get those off the socks?

Answer: This is true of the Summer Whinnys® and Whinny Warmers®. They are socks and shavings attach to them. We have found that the socks easily clean if you brush them off with the same medium bristle brush you use to brush your horse. Brush the shavings off the socks while they are on the horse. It makes this process so simple.
